Perennials

Many of the best and longest flowering plants are perennials such as Zagreb Coreopsis, Pinchusion Sunflower, and Carnations. Many species produce flowers at times when annuals are not in bloom, such as in very early spring or late into the fall, extending the nectar and pollen supply for insects. Perennials are non-woody plants from accross the plant kingdom that typically die back to the ground in the winter and then come back from roots or tubers the following spring, but some species remain evergreen through the winter. There are also species that only appear above ground for short periods of time, such as Bleeding Hearts that grow and bloom in the spring and then die back once the soil dries up in the early summer. The leafy period of these species can usually be extended when plants are irrigated.
